Kiekie in search of interesting IG profiles! This week: Tropico Photo.
Tropico Photo is the collaborative work of Michelle Norris and Forrest Aguar.
In their work they pair shapes and lines and seek out compelling color combinations.
When and for what reason did you become a photographer?
''I started taking photos in middle school with a disposable camera, which turned into taking darkroom classes in high school and eventually majoring in photography in college. Forrest was a multi-disciplinary artist all through his upbringing and by way of scientific illustration, finally made his way into the same photography program.''
How did you meet and decide to work together?
''Forrest and I met in the Lamar Dodd School of Art at UGA. We hit if off quickly and became friends, competitors, and partners. We began sharing work that we found exciting with each other. Creating work together just made sense after we became romantically involved.''
Where do you get your inspiration from?
''Inspiration comes from so many places. What other artists are making is definitely a factor, but it can be much broader. Traveling brings inspiration - from encountering a city for the first time, seeing a very unique flower, to a small street full of windows and hanging laundry. Sometimes we'll see a quality of light outside and we'll want to re-create it later. It's important to always have your eyes open and be appreciative of everything you come across.''
How did you come up with this series?
''We love to activate and bring energy into beautiful locations through unexpected compositions and figural engagement. La Muralla Roja was like a dream for us because we had time and space to play and try new things. Much of it was unplanned and centered on letting inspiration come to us as we wandered.''
How do you scout a great location?
''There is something special that we are looking for in every location that we use. We love spaces that are minimal and clean but also offer the opportunity for interesting depth, shadows, or flatness. Plants and beautiful colors don't hurt either.''
How do you find your own style as a photographer?
''There has to be a healthy balance between finding out what interests you in the work of others, and also what you can bring to the table that is fresh and unique to you.''
What do you hope to achieve in your career as a photographer?
''We want to keep exploring and showing people a unique and beautiful perspective. We want to be open to wherever our career takes us because the most important part is to continue doing something we really love.''
